Safe Driving Practices During Winter Conditions

To ensure safety during the impending snowstorm, consider the following driving tips:

1. Reduce Speed: Snow and ice significantly reduce tire traction. Lowering your speed gives you more time to react to unforeseen events.

2. Maintain Safe Following Distance: Increase the distance between your vehicle and the one ahead to allow ample time for braking. On icy roads, stopping distances can be up to ten times longer than usual.

3. Gentle Maneuvers: Avoid sudden steering, acceleration, or braking, as abrupt movements can cause skidding. If your vehicle begins to skid, steer in the direction you want to go and avoid overcorrecting.

4. Use Appropriate Gears: For manual transmission vehicles, start in second gear to reduce wheel spin. Shift to higher gears smoothly to maintain control.

5. Equip Your Vehicle: Ensure your car is winter-ready by checking tire tread depth and pressure, using winter-grade windshield washer fluid, and keeping your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up.

6. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Carry essentials such as an ice scraper, snow brush, shovel, flashlight, first aid kit, jumper cables, warm clothing, blankets, non-perishable food, and water. These items can be invaluable if you become stranded.

7. Stay Informed: Regularly monitor weather updates and road conditions. If conditions are severe, consider postponing non-essential travel until the situation improves.
