Post Plant Closure in Cobourg Marks Major Shift for Local Industry

Cobourg, ON — A major employer in Cobourg is preparing to shut down operations, as Post Consumer Brands has confirmed its cereal production plant in the town will be closing within the next year. The closure will result in more than 200 employees losing their jobs, marking a significant change for the local economy and community.

The facility has been responsible for making well-known breakfast cereals, including Shreddies and Honeycomb, and has operated in the region for decades. Company officials stated the decision is part of a plan to consolidate production and streamline operations across its North American network.

The announcement arrives just ahead of the possible introduction of new tariffs, which some believe may have played a role in the timing. However, Post has not directly linked trade policy to the decision.

“This move is part of a broader strategy to improve efficiency and reduce excess capacity,” the company said in a statement, adding that support will be available for affected staff as the transition unfolds.

This closure follows a series of recent shutdowns in Ontario’s manufacturing sector. Other affected locations include:

  • A bakery in Cobourg that once produced cakes and baked snacks.

  • An auto parts facility in Port Hope that ceased certain production lines.

  • Packaging plants in Belleville and Trenton that recently closed or scaled back.

Post Consumer Brands has also closed several other plants across North America in recent years. These included locations in California, Texas, Massachusetts, and most recently Ohio, all part of efforts to reduce overhead and adjust to changes in consumer demand.

Local leaders are now turning attention toward economic recovery, retraining opportunities, and potential new investment to offset the loss. The impact of the closure will be felt not just by workers, but by families, small businesses, and the broader community that has supported the plant for generations.
