Flood Watch Issued for Trent River Communities

Lower Trent Conservation has issued a Flood Watch for areas along the Trent River, including Brighton, Quinte West, Stirling-Rawdon, and Trent Hills. This watch remains in effect until Thursday, January 23, at noon.

Weather Outlook

A slow-moving weather system is expected to bring light snow and warmer temperatures from Wednesday through Saturday. However, a sharp drop in temperature will follow, with frigid arctic air pushing temperatures into the minus 20s by Sunday and continuing into next week.

Flood Risks

Residents should be aware of potential minor flooding in low-lying areas such as:

  • Access roads

  • Backyards

  • Basements

High water levels and unstable riverbanks also pose safety risks for those near the water or engaging in outdoor activities.

Ice Formation Concerns

One significant risk is frazil ice, which forms when open water is exposed to extreme cold and strong winds. Frazil ice can accumulate rapidly on:

  • Bridge supports

  • Riverbanks

  • Other structures

This buildup can obstruct water flow, leading to ice jams and sudden, unexpected flooding.

Precautions for Residents

To minimize risks, residents are advised to:

  • Monitor water levels closely: Be vigilant for signs of ice buildup and rising water.

  • Check sump pumps: Ensure they are functioning properly to prevent basement flooding.

  • Secure personal property: Protect boats, docks, and other items along riverbanks.

  • Avoid waterways: Stay away from rivers, streams, and open ditches.

Safety Reminders

  • Ice cover on rivers and lakes is unsafe.

  • Keep children and pets away from water, particularly near dams, culverts, and bridges.

  • Extreme cold could freeze floodwaters, creating additional hazards.
