The suspension and cancellation of some Child and Youth Care (CYC) programs in Ontario have sparked growing concern among educators, professionals, and community advocates. While many programs are still running, the decision to scale back training opportunities raises serious questions about the future of the profession and the essential services it provides.
CYC programs train Child and Youth Care Practitioners (CYCPs)—the frontline workers who support children, youth, and families in mental health, education, child welfare, and community services. These professionals build relationships, foster resilience, and advocate for young people in vulnerable situations. Without enough new graduates entering the field, many worry that essential services will struggle to keep up with demand.
So far, these schools have been affected:
St. Lawrence College and Sault College – Programs suspended, meaning no new students are being accepted.
Fleming College – Program permanently discontinued.
While other CYC programs across Ontario are still available, there’s growing concern that more could be at risk. Advocates are calling on colleges and policymakers to find solutions—whether through better funding, stronger recruitment efforts, or labor market analysis—to ensure these programs remain sustainable.
With so many children and families still feeling the effects of the pandemic, now is not the time to scale back support. Many are urging institutions, professionals, and policymakers to work together to keep CYC education strong, so future generations of CYCPs can continue making a difference in the lives of those who need them most.
Why This Matters
The future of Child and Youth Care programs impacts not just students but also the children, youth, and families who rely on them. Many may not realize these programs are at risk, but raising awareness can make a difference. By sharing this issue with others—whether in your community, online, or with decision-makers—we can help protect these essential programs and the support they provide.
